The Camp Mystic tragedy unfolded rapidly with a flash flood on July 4, 2025, where rising Guadalupe River waters overwhelmed low-lying cabins, especially Twins and Bubble Inn, trapping and sweeping away young campers, leading to immense loss of life, despite some counselors' efforts to move girls to higher ground in cabins like Angel's Attic and Cloud 9.
The disaster resulted in the deaths of 27 campers and staff members.
It has been laid upon my heart to make comfort quilts for the families who have lost loved ones in the July 4th floods in the Texas Hill Country. The quilts are sligntly bigger than throw size. The can have a picture of your loved one or it can be made to represent a theme, like the ocean, wolves or a unicorn. The material can come from your loved one's clothes or T-shirts or other fabric.
The idea was an inspiration to do what I could to bring comfort. The labor and material are free to the families. There is a GoFundMe link to help offset the cost of the quilts.
The inspiration came from the realization taht I was not able to sustain the clean-up effort but I can sew. I hope to bring comfort to as many families as possible.
Sincerely,
Laura Stratton
Above is an example of a Memory quilt for a child who loved the ocean. They can be any theme that the family wants. They can also be for adults or pets. There are so many hurting hearts in the Hill Country. Please pass the message on that these Memory quilts are free to the hurting families. The design, right now, is a stained glass pattern with a center panel. It is about 53" x 66". The center panel can be a picture of a loved one, a pet, or themed.
There are 4 costs:
The picture in the middle
The materials to make it
The cost of the long arm to quilt it
The cost of mailing it to the family
I would like to offer them to the families completely free of charge. My labor is my contribution. All GoFundMe money would go to the costs above.
Thank you,
Laura Stratton
